Hospitals build reputations just like individuals and businesses do. Some are rated highly and others are notorious for medical malpractice incidents.

Consumer Reports gathered information on more than 1,159 hospitals in 44 states by interviewing doctors, patients, and medical professionals and also reviewing hospital inspection procedures and investigations. This research was done in order to rate hospitals in terms of safety.

Some of their findings and evaluations included:

  • Sacred Heart Hospital in Chicago received the lowest (16) rating and its rate of bloodstream infections was more than twice the national benchmark
  • Billings Clinic in Montana rated the highest, but its safety rating was only 72
  • Other New York hospitals with rather low safety scores were New York-Presbyterian (32) and Mount Sinai Medical Center (30)
  • One in 20 hospitalized patients develop infections (sources are dirty instruments, improperly sterilized catheters or needles, and contaminated hands of hospital workers)
  • An estimated 290,000 surgical-site infections occur each year in hospitals.  Read More:
